When one has raced everything from Formula Fords to Sports Renaults to GTP cars to Sprint Cars to Formula One cars to Winston Cup cars to Sportscars, it's safe to say one is a driver for all classes. Enter, David Murry. It was back in 1981 when the Atlanta resident first stepped into a Formula Ford and ever since he's built a reputation as a reliable and fast race car driver, not to mention absorbing a label as one of the "good guys" in the often wacky world of motorsports.Murry's present ride with Case it Racing, G&W Racing, and Kelly Moss Racing in a Porsche 911 GT3-R began with Formula Fords, then he moved to Sports Renaults. Between 1986 and 1991, the New Orleans native drove everything he could get his hands on -- GTP cars, Winston Cup cars, Sprint Cars and Sportscars (which included a factory Lotus Esprit Turbo in which he scored two wins). It was in 1992, however, when Murry's career really began to take shape. An alignment with a certain German manufacturer, named Porsche, would prove beneficial. After recording three wins in the Firestone Firehawk series driving a Porsche 968 during the 1992 and 1993 seasons, he went on to claim the Firehawk driver's championship and manufacturer's title for Porsche in 1994 in that same 968, winning 5 races. He also finished second in the prestigious Porsche Cup driver's standings. From 1985 to present day, Murry has recorded two other championships, the most recent coming in 1995 -- the SCCA's World Challenge driver's crown. While winning 5 of 8 races, he also helped Porsche to the manufacturer's title. He also won "One Lap of America" for Porsche driving a Porsche 911 Turbo. Murry also began his introduction in Stock Car racing with Phoenix Air Racing in ARCA and Winston Cup at Watkins Glen in 1995.In 1997, Murry was the lead driver in a Porsche 911 RSR for Jim Matthews Racing in Professional Sportscar Racing's Exxon Supreme GT Series. He finished third in the GTS-3 drivers championship, winning 2 races.1998 saw Murry piloting an LMP1 Porsche at Le Mans for the Porsche factory and a WSC/Can Am Car with Jim Matthews Racing in the Sportscar series and USRRC.1999 saw Murry qualify for his first NASCAR Winston Cup race. He ran as high as 8th in the Watkins Glen race before an oil line failed, forcing him to pit for repairs. Additionally, he campaigned a Porsche 911 RSR for the Reiser-Callas Rennsport team in the American Le Mans Series and the defunct USRRC.2000 Murry piloted the Skea Racing International Porsche 911 GT3-R in the 24 Hours of Daytona, 24 Hours of Le Mans and the American Le Mans Series.2001 Murry will drive a Porsche 911 GT3-R in the American Le Mans Series and Grand Am. Additionally, he will be seeking opportunities in Winston Cup during the 2001 season. |
